You've heard the proverb, 'Give a man a fish, and he eats for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you'll feed him for a lifetime.' That's what Heifer does!

Heifer works by giving people the skills and gifts they need to lift themselves out of poverty. Through the gift of a cow, a goat, a flock of geese, or a hive of bees, families gain a source of nutrition and income. They can feed their families the milk from the cow or the eggs from their chickens, and sell the excess milk or eggs to send their children to school.

Heifer's model is so successful because each family who receives a gift from Heifer has to 'pass on that gift' or 'pay it forward' creating a chain of giving. The first female offspring or equivalent is passed on to another member of that community, helping others help themselves. It's powerful and empowering.

The podcast producers, Jesse and Jeane Stern, are Heifer supporters who decided to use their unique gifts and talents to help spread the word about this incredible organization.

How Can I Help?

To learn more about how to get involved, visit heifer.org. You can visit one of our learning centers, get connected with a local office to find out about community volunteering, or even go on a study tour! April is Pass on the Gift Month! We can't end hunger and poverty overnight, so we've set aside the month of April.

Passing On The Gift

In almost two hundred Pass on the Gift ceremonies in towns and villages from Nepal to Ecuador, families will pass on dairy goats, alpacas, and other animals to help other families begin the road to self-reliance. Heifer supporters - like you - can join in this global event. Host a Heifer House Party, serve international food, or make it a potluck! Organize a meal at your school or congregation! Get together with friends and family and help raise funds to give new families a life of hope. Check out passonthegift.org for more information on how to get involved in this great event.

And remember to check out heifer.org to find out how you can make a difference!
